How to play Oddmoon

Oddmoon is a free storytelling card game for 3 to 8 players, right in your browser. Every card is a small surreal painting: a door standing in the sea, a whale carrying a house through the clouds. Give a clue for one of yours, and try to make some, but not all, of the others guess it.

A turn

  1. The Teller (it goes round the table) picks one of their 6 cards and gives a clue: a word, a feeling, a line from a song, anything. They have 60 seconds.
  2. Everyone else picks a card from their own hand that fits the clue, to fool the others (40 seconds).
  3. The cards are shuffled and laid face up. Everyone but the Teller votes for the card they think is the Teller's (40 seconds). You can't vote for your own.
  4. The reveal: whose card was whose, who voted for what, the points. Everyone draws back up to 6.

Scoring

  • If some, but not all, find the Teller's card: the Teller and everyone who found it get 3 points.
  • If everyone finds it (too plain) or nobody does (too strange): the Teller gets nothing and everyone else gets 2.
  • Every vote your card draws gives you 1 point.
  • Bullseye: when exactly one player finds it, the Teller and that player get 1 more.
  • Full moon: every 5th turn all points count double. The game warns you a turn before.

Tips

  • Don't describe the picture. Say what it feels like, what it reminds you of, a title it could have.
  • Aim for a clue half the table gets. A Bullseye is worth more than an easy win.
  • As a decoy, give the card that could really be the Teller's: every vote it draws is a point.
  • Think about who the Teller is. Clues from friends are full of inside jokes.

Questions

Is Oddmoon free?
Yes. It's free to play in your browser: no download, no signup, no ads.
What kind of game is it?
A storytelling party card game with picture clues. Every card is a small dreamlike painting; you give clues for them and guess which card a clue was really about.
How many players?
3 to 8. Bots fill the table up to 5, so you can always play, and they're always labeled as bots.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, on phones, tablets and computers. It plays well with the phone held upright.
How do I play with friends?
Open the game, tap With friends and share the table's link. Friends who open it sit down at your table, and the host picks when to start.
How do I win?
The first to reach the target wins: 10, 20, 30 points (the host picks; 20 is the classic game).
Where do the cards come from?
We paint all 337 of them ourselves: every picture is drawn in your browser from its own little recipe.
Do I need an account?
No. Your name and level are saved on your device.

Ready? Bots are always waiting at a table.
